That’s a good point to bring up! I don’t know about 20 years ago, but I think today at least there’s this “surfer dude” kind of style that parents seem to be okay with their boys wanting, hence boys having longer hair sometimes. I don’t know, I definitely see lots of moms who pressure the stylist into cutting their boy’s hair short, when the boy wants to keep it longer.
Also, related to the part where you said “in SF of all places,” maybe I should clarify that I work in the Marina district in San Francisco, which is kind of like an entirely different world in relation to the rest of San Francisco, haha. I kind of hate it most of the time. But also, despite the fact that yes, San Francisco is this awesome bubble of lots of open-minded people, there are still those who aren’t so open-minded.
And maybe down the road if this little girl does happen to be a lesbian, maybe the mom will totally be okay with it, but I just think it sucks that she already seems to be steering her away from styles that are considered more “masculine” by people who are into gender roles and shit. The mom told me that her daughter was going through a “phase” in which she wanted short hair, and wanted to “wear nothing but jeans and t-shirts.” Of course, I was at work so I had to maintain a friendly demeanor but I really wanted to be like, “There’s nothing wrong with that! Let her be who she is!”
I’m not a parent, so maybe it’s different for those who are, but if I have children in the future, I can guarantee I’m not going to give a shit if a boy child of mine wants long hair or a girl child of mine wants short hair. It’s hair!
